Northern Illinois Home Service Marketing
You’ve built a real home service business somewhere between Rockford and Elgin. Your crews know what they’re doing, your reviews are honest, and the phone still rings most days. What’s changed is the pressure. Chicago-based franchise brands keep pushing further west and north, your ad costs are creeping, and marketing has been a patchwork for a while now. Maybe a local agency that also handles restaurants and law firms. Maybe boosted Facebook posts. Maybe Angi leads you don’t actually own. If that sounds like your setup, this page is for you. We’re a Chicagoland-based marketing agency that works only with home service businesses, and Northern Illinois is right in our backyard.
The market landscape for Northern Illinois home services
A few things we see consistently in this region, worth naming out loud.
Franchise overflow from Chicagoland is real. National and Chicago-based franchise home service brands are actively expanding into Rockford, Elgin, Crystal Lake, and the towns along the I-90 corridor. You feel it in your lead flow, and you feel it in the bids you lose to companies with ten times your marketing budget. Independents aren’t outmatched on the work itself. They’re outmatched on the marketing system behind the work.
Media markets outside the Chicago DMA tend to stretch a marketing budget further. The same Google Ads dollars usually buy meaningfully more visibility in the Rockford area than they do in the city itself. That matters if you’re trying to build a compounding presence without Chicago-level spend.
The I-90 corridor is one logistics spine. If you run multiple locations, or you’re thinking about adding one, covering Chicagoland and Northern Illinois from the same operational footprint is workable in a way it isn’t in most other regions.
Rockford’s manufacturing and aerospace base shapes the customer mix too. Stable skilled-trade households, older housing stock, homes that genuinely need maintenance. That’s a strong base for HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and roofing demand, and it’s not going away.
Verticals we work with across Northern Illinois
We’re home services marketers working with HVAC businesses, plumbing companies, electricians, and roofing contractors, along with pest control and landscaping operators across the region. If you run a plumbing company in DeKalb doing $1.5M in revenue, the marketing questions look different than they do for the insurance agency down the street, and the agency across town that serves both is usually good at neither.
Most local generalist agencies in Northern Illinois serve every industry from manufacturing to nonprofits to pizza places. That’s a fine business model. It just isn’t ours. We chose to focus narrowly on home services so the strategy, the channels, the content, and the campaign playbooks are built for this vertical specifically.
How Kodiak approaches this market
We run the ads that bring the calls in: Local Services Ads and pay-per-click on Google, plus Meta ads, all connected to one plan built around your business. Month-to-month, with a qualified-call minimum we put in writing. That’s our plans.
Strategy comes first, even though we move fast. Before we turn any ads on, we get clear on your business, your market, and the qualified-call number we’re confident it can support. Then we build: your Google and Meta ads, your website built to convert, call and conversion tracking, live in weeks, not months. Marketing amplifies what you’ve built, including the problems, so we get the strategy right before we spend a dollar on ads. This is the same framework we walk through in our home service marketing guide.
Home services focus is the real differentiator. Brad Knight is a StoryBrand Certified Guide and Small Business Flight Plan Certified Coach, and the playbooks we run are built for home service businesses in the $1M to $3M revenue range, multi-location preferred. We’re honest about fit. If your business is under $1M or you need leads tomorrow, we’ll say so. And we’re not going to try to rent you more Angi leads. The whole point is to own the pipeline you’re building.

In-person, when proximity allows
Kodiak is based in Chicagoland, so for clients in Rockford, Elgin, Crystal Lake, and the towns along I-90, we’ll likely meet in person from time to time. It’s not guaranteed and it’s not in the contract. It’s just how the relationship tends to work when proximity allows: a kickoff get-to-know-you, a big annual review, a working session when something warrants it. A nice feature of working with a regional agency, not a deliverable we’re promising.
Let’s figure out if we’re a fit
If you run a home service business in Rockford, DeKalb, Sycamore, Dixon, Elgin, Crystal Lake, Algonquin, or Waukegan, and you’re tired of scattered marketing or rented leads, let’s talk. 15 minutes. Just an honest conversation about fit, your market, and whether our plans make sense for where your business is right now.
